Only on her walk home did she fully grasp that Marija believed Mikey had killed Cécile DuQuenne. Helen still trusted Mikey was innocent. She couldnât understand how a mother could believe anything else about her son. If Helen ever did suspect her son, it would be a secret sheâd keep close, a secret sheâd barely admit to herself.
Her cell phone interrupted her thoughts. Surprised it even had a signal along this road, she answered thinking it was Frank. âIâm almost home.â
âWhat?â A womanâs voice. âIs this Helen Terfel?â
âYes. Whoâs this?â
âDelyth Bitersee. They arrestedâ¦â
âWho? Youâre breaking up.â
âAndré Duâ¦â
âAndré who?â Helen knew the answer before sheâd finished the question.
âDuQuenne.â
âWhere? Why?â
âHe⦠The brotherâ¦â
âWhat? Hang on. Iâll try calling you back when I get home.â
âYouâre breaking up. Tryâ¦back.â
âIâm hanging up now. Iâll call back.â
She hurried home.
She longed to talk with someone about Mikey and his mother. Frank would listen then say it was none of her business. And her friends wouldnât understand why she was even involved. She knew she had to be cautious about what she shared with a reporter, but she felt this particular reporter had a good heart and could be trusted. Even so, she warned herself to be careful.
âIâm sorry,â she said when Delyth answered. âReception on the road is terrible.â
âIâm driving. When you didnât call back right away, I thought it was on my end.â
âWhatâs this about André DuQuenne?â Helen prompted. She didnât want any more talk about cell phones.
âHe got himself arrested. He went to the DuQuenne houseâthe brother is living there nowâand they had some kind of argument. The brother called the police. Thatâs all I know. The police report didnât go into detail.â
âIs he still in jail?â
âNo. The brother didnât press charges. Just a minute. Iâm going to pull over so we can talk.â
Helen heard the tires rolling over gravel and a thump as the car came to a stop.
âThatâs better,â Delyth said. âI thought youâd like to know that the second of your suspects has been found. I donât think it matters, though. The evidence against Vitkus seems pretty overwhelming.â
âI thought the whole case rested on Freddie Olsenâs gossip about an argument.â
âIâm afraid thereâs lots more.â She told Helen what Sam had reported from the preliminary hearing.
âOh dear.â She decided to trust her intuition about Delyth the person over her suspicions of Delyth the reporter; she described her lunch with Marija.
âThat makes sense,â Delyth responded. âSam said Mike isnât helping his lawyers build a case. In that situation, they have to rely on knocking down the prosecutionâs arguments whatever way they can. It doesnât mean they believe Mikeâs guilty. Iâm more interested in the argument between Marija and Cécile DuQuenne. DuQuenne could have been right. Mikeâs mother could have been looking for the real jewels when DuQuenne caught her snooping around.â
âAnd she sent Mikey in to be the muscle?â Helen said. Her tone suggested skepticism as she said it.
âWhat?â
âYou know. The enforcer. To force DuQuenne to give up the jewels.â
Delyth laughed. âYou watch too much TV.
